The theme for this year’s Ushirika day celebrations is “Co-operative Enterprise Achieve Sustainable Development for all.” The main Ushirika day celebrations will be held on the 5th of July in keeping with the International Co-operative Day. The International Co-operative Day is an annual celebration of the co-operative movement observed on the first Saturday in July since 1923 by the International Co-operative Alliance

wilson-songa-principle-secretary In his keynote address Dr Wilson Songa called on the leaders within the Co-operative Society’s to practice servant leadership, and encouraged more ladies to vie for leadership positions within the Co-operative movement. He noted that it was commendable indeed that Kenya was number one in Africa in terms of Co-operative development. He stated that in order for the country to retain this position we must work at being innovative.
Dr Songa said, “As Co-operatives we must encourage the youth to come onboard as we need sustained good leadership. Vision 2013 encourages co-operatives to utilize their full potential to improve the quality of life of our citizens, through employment creation and alleviation of poverty.”

“Our role as a ministry is to look at new sectors where we can develop, new products and cooperative movements such as we have done in the coffee and dairy industry. We are currently looking at revisiting the textile and leather industries in partnership with Savings and Credit Societies.”

“Over the years I have noted the increased good corporate governance within the management of cooperative societies, as we are now utilizing competence in management positions. I urge the leaders within the corporative movement, to embrace performance contracting in all their activities, and have cohesiveness of purpose.” He added.

He went further to state that the Ministry is working at enabling affordable credit , and urged the cooperatives to review their business and strategic plans to ensure that they remaining competitive and benefit from the devolved government. Dr Songa stated that the Ministry already has development partners who ready to support capacity building in SACCO’s.

The launch of the Ushirika day celebrations will be followed with the following activities:

  • 14th June 2014: Co-operatives Environment day
  • 27th to 29th of June 2014: Co-operatives sports and Family fun day
  • 5th July 2014: Ushirika day

On December 16, 1992, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed in resolution 47/90 "the first Saturday of July 1995 to be International Day of Cooperatives, marking the centenary of the establishment of the International Cooperative Alliance."Since 1995 the United Nations' International Day of Co-operatives has been observed jointly alongside International Co-operative Day.
